  • Palabras Pintorescas: Raining on what others call ‘parched land’

It is raining as I write this. We are blessed yet again. Our vast, huge crop of weeds and wildflowers say thank you, muchas gracias to our weather gods as well.
Yes, I live in an isolated mountain canyon. But that doesn’t mean the outside world can’t find me. I have two copies of the front page weather report sent to me in the last 48 hours, no less.
One was from the Idaho Statesman and the other was from the Tucson Daily newspaper. Everyone knows I like weather stories, but I wish this weather story wasn’t true, or front page news.

  • Mora County Notebook: Mora County youths perform well at fair

The Mora 4-H members showed what a hard working skilled group they, their parents and leaders are when one sees the results of the judging at the Mora/San Miguel County Fair. There were champions in several categories. Also the Fair Queen and Princess were from Mora.

The Ashe Ranch of Mora was the winner of the Ranch Rodeo.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Couldn’t put down this Mora County-based book

Well, I never dreamed I’d be reviewing a just-published book about Mora County and the somewhat historic events that happened here and in Alaska a few decades ago.
“Pilgrim’s Wilderness: A true story of faith and madness on the Alaskan Frontier,” has just been published by Crown Press, and is written by Tom Kizzia, a longtime reporter for the Alaskan Newspaper, the Anchorage Daily News.

  • Montoya new Mora County Manager

Montoya has had many and varied experiences and a long history of service to the different communities and programs that she has been in charge of.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Longtime friends pay a visit to Camp Davis

It can’t get any better than this! That is just one of the remarks I’ve heard about our July weather here. I have measured 12.19 inches of rain in July. That might be a record for July here. The transformation from desert to lush, green and blooming mountains is unbelievable.
Long-time friends from Dallas have just left after a fun week’s visit with me. David was a camper at Camp Davis when he was a kid, and his parents stayed with us that last week of camp when they came to pick him up.

  • Mora County Notebook: Utah work camp does repairs at Mora church

Last week there was a lot of activity around the Mora Presbyterian Church as a group of six adults gave their time and skills to do some repairs on the grounds, church and manse as they worked with some of the local church members.
