  • Palabras Pintorescas: Happiness is having good friends

Happiness is having what we call “always friends” come by, come back for a visit. Such was the case recently when our long- ago neighbors showed up to talk about our fun old times here when they lived just up the road from or ranch headquarters.

  • Mora County Notebook: Mora Farmers Market in full swing

The Mora Valley Farmers Market has been in full swing since the beginning of July. Any time one going along Main Street in Mora on Friday afternoon will see many people crowded around booths at the Southwest Capital Bank parking lot, buying fresh produce grown on the local farms and ranches.

At the beginning of the season there was plenty of early summer produce as lettuce, other greens, peas and radishes.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Prayers for moisture were answered

Yes, it was “water, water everywhere, and nary a drop to drink” as we say goodbye to September. Prayers surely were answered here in our mountains and we watched, with lots of other folks, as drops soon and suddenly became inches of rain.

I love walking through our nearby forest; it is such a thrill to see our stately pines absolutely soaked; their bark is a glowing dark brown now and hopefully the visiting bark beetles will finally meet their match. Yes, if you want to see a very sick and dying forest, just drive down Mountain View Drive.

  • Mora County Notebook: Cinderella play a huge success

Cinderella The Story of Big Foot was a great success. The actors were very professional and spoke their lines without a hitch and they could be heard very well.  The performance was held Saturday night and again on Sunday afternoon at the Mora Elementary Gymnasium. For both performances there were more than a hundred people in attendance. It was a true comedy that kept the audience laughing as the actors did a great take off of the Cinderella story throwing in the fact that she had big feet.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Staying true to football

Would you believe after all these years of goofing off and playing around, I am still a tried and true football fan? And, yes, I am in a fantasy football league, and my partner, Kat and I plan to win big time this year. Yes, I have my favorite teams and favorite players, but what and who Kat and I pick and who we end up with are two different programs. So it goes in this fantasy world!

  • Mora County Notebook: Chacon water problems and blessings

Editor’s note: Ruth Fort’s son, Paul, is president of the Agua Pura Water acquisition board.

The Agua Pura Water Board has been struggling with water system problems for several weeks. There have been leaks in the lines to the consumers. They would get one place repaired and turn the water on and then another leak would show up. Estevan Sanchez and John Abeyta, certified operators, have worked tirelessly along with the rest of the board members and community people doing what they can to help.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Wrapping up the summer season

Is summer really coming to an end? Time does fly when one is having fun, and fun we have had here at the ranch once again. Sharing nature’s bounty and nature’s beauty with our little people sure is fun.
The little people can’t count hummingbirds buzzing my three feeders any better than I can. But they did take a lots of pictures of them, possibly for show-and-tell at school in the Washington D.C. area.
