  • Palabras Pintorescas: Slim notebooks and Eddie

Memorial Day is always memorable for me, here in our big mountains. Friends, neighbors, actually … and I try to “tour the ranch” as such on our ATVs. Tinta Negra, my old dog decided she would guard this house this time. She’s 12 now and thinks it is best to hold down the back step.

We start off by going past our ranch cemetery, and we all silently wish those aren’t with us well. May they rest in peace, and this includes our many dear dogs and cats.

  • Mora County Notebook: 26 high school seniors graduate

Twenty-six people received their diplomas from Mora High School last Friday evening, and they are ready to begin a new chapter in their lives.

Many will be continuing their education at Luna Community College, New Mexico Highlands University and the University of New Mexico. Some will be entering the service to serve their country in the armed forces. They have all done well to graduate from Mora High School and are wished well in their future endeavors.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Road building and the little taxi

Surprises come in different ways, I’ve learned. I sometimes remember to watch Antiques Roadshow on Channel  5. About the time I start to think that old piece of junk hiding on the shelf is just that: junk, I see something very similar appraised on that show, and it is usually worth a lot of money.

  • Mora County Notebook: Schools celebrate Dia de la Cultura

Earlier this month, the Mora Independent Schools celebrated Dia de la Cultura with a wonderful program presented by the kindergarten through the middle school classes.
There was a large crowd filling the bleachers in the gym. Chairs were set up on both sides of the floor to accommodate all of the audience. The gym was tastefully decorated with the Hispanic theme.

Behind the performers were black curtains to make a “back stage.” On the curtains were hung sarapes, sombreros, guitars and other mementos of the Hispanic culture.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Lessons learned in tornado country

I think spring in finally here. It is a beautiful May morning and I have just fed some hungry critters. One of our cows gives little milk, so she and her kid are in the corral for a spell, until the baby’s bottle is no longer needed to supplement.

The three old horses need extra hay as well. Their teeth aren’t good, they are “stove up” as old timers would say, and they appreciate any and all handouts now.

  • Mora County Notebook: Music department performs concerts

The Mora Schools Music Department presented two concerts last week.

On Tuesday evening,  the mariachi concert was held with 29 participants and Joaquin Maestas-Manuel directing.

On Wednesday evening, the bands of the Mora Schools held another concert.
