  • Palabras Pintorescas: Did a fruitcake collide with a satellite?

My days spent way out in our mountains are never the same. One thing leads to another, and the story pops into my head. I discovered the so necessary candied fruits for fruitcakes are now for sale in our grocery stores. No, I don’t make fruitcakes any more, but I do enjoy eating same. Then I read in the newspaper that a Russian satellite is breaking apart and will soon drop on our good earth, in pieces, no less. Apparently it did no damage when it landed.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: The fights those Christmas catalogs caused

Oh, my! There must be some mistake. I just got a Christmas catalog in the mail. How dare any business try to buck the trend by sending these catalogs out before Thanksgiving?

My mother (if she were here) would have a lot to say about this rush to sell toys and more. The big catalogs of yesteryear Montgomery Ward, Sears, Roebuck and Penneys came to our house right after Thanksgiving. Our home post office was at Valmora (the TB sanatorium where we lived) was in the back of our Valmora store. The store was small.

  • Mora County Notebook: Native celebrates Diamond Jubilee

Sister Teresa of the Child Jesus, OCD, of the Monastery of Our Mother of Mercy, Alexandria, S.D., celebrated her Diamond Jubilee of entrance on Oct. 25.

She had celebrated her renewal of vows at a Concelebrated Mass on May 31 with the Most Rev. John J. Swain, Bishop of Sioux Falls, S.D.. as principal celebrant.

He gave a beautiful homily in which he quoted St. Teresa of the Child Jesus, thanking sister for her years of service to God and His church.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: The importance of tree thinning

That old saying that you can’t see the forest for the trees isn’t always true. I had an opportunity recently to see the trees, the forest and now the properly thinned forest first-hand right up the canyon from our ranch headquarters.

Elauterio and Antonia Vigil, who are our nearby neighbors, were named New Mexico State Tree Farmers of the year, 2013.

  • Mora County Notebook: Old Mora Courthouse has interesting history

The most beautiful building Mora has ever had was the old courthouse that is just a memory for some of the older people. There have been old photos and paintings made to remind the younger generation of the past. This beautiful painting was done by the artist Sylvia Ortega who lives in Guadalupita.
