Mora County

The Mora Research Center was established in 1972 to serve a statewide mission in forestry research, working with landowners and federal and state agencies to steward our forests, range, wildlife and water.  

For more than 20 years, John T. Harrington was professor and superintendent of the center.  To honor his dedication and service to New Mexico State University, the Board of Regents approved naming the center the John T. Harrington Forestry Research Center at Mora.  

I wasn’t sure whether I had lost my wits or just gone to the dogs recently when I decided to walk a mile for a scholarship in John Harrington’s name. Our beautiful, very successful Mora Tree Research center was just renamed the John T. Harrington Forestry Research Center in his memory, and part of the festivities included a 10K run and a one-mile dog friendly run/walk.

The flier said, “Join us to celebrate John, his passion for running, the mountains, and his dogs.”

Suddenly it is summer, and suddenly summer is flying by. I know it must be August because our annual fun filled invasion of our little people has just occurred.         

Ah, yes, changes are occurring. It is a different world out there to this old lady. The preteen girls sit quietly on the couch, each with an Ipod in hand, playing games while it rains. The rains let up and boom! They are out the door, playing hide-and-seek.

The Mora /San Miguel 4-H’ers did well at the San Miguel / Mora County Fair last week. They showed lambs, goats, hogs, steers, rabbits and chickens. They took part in the Ranch Rodeo events and the horse show. After a year of good work ethic they came home with pride in the fact that they did very well with their showing.
