  • Palabras Pintorescas: Auctions are always great social events

I still meet people who say they were at the Valmora auction and/or the auction we had here at the ranch, way back in the early 1990s. Valmora was my family’s tuberculosis sanatorium established in 1904. Obviously when a place collects almost 90 years of “stuff” the only way to move it out is with a sale.

  • Mora County Notebook: Church presents Christmas story play

Last Wednesday, the Mora Valley Baptist Church presented its annual Christmas story. The program began with the lighting of candles by the youth.

The play began with the prediction of John the Baptist’s birth and Jesus birth by Gabriel. Then the visit of the angel to Mary, her visit with Elizabeth, John’s birth, It continued with all the details before the birth of Jesus and the action after the birth as the holy family flees to Egypt. It ended when the family finally returned to Nazareth.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: The varied stories of the Pecos Wilderness

This happy holiday time always translates into fun ‘way out here in the mountains. My friends, many in my age group, still send hand-written messages on Christmas cards. Yes, the list gets shorter every year, sadly. Some of the old Gascon Gang have now weathered their last storm. And some even read this column on the internet. I am flattered!

  • Mora County Notebook: Mora music students perform for community

Last week the citizens of Mora Valley had a treat to help them feel richer in the spirit of Christmas, as the Mora Schools Music Department gave two Christmas concerts.

On Monday evening, the Mora mariachi group performed for the audience with their traditional music and the Christmas music played in their form of thrilling violins, guitars and trumpets.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Christmas trees and ice skating go together

How many trees does it take to make a Christmas tree? Most of us would say one, even a scraggly one at that.

  • Mora County Notebook: Christmas spirit alive in the valley

The big week-end in Mora started on Friday with the school children decorating the Christmas tree inside of the Southwest Capital Bank. Joyce Romo and Sarah Martinez brought their second graders to the bank to decorate the pine tree on Friday morning with attractive decorations the students made in class.

Then on Saturday the Winter Fest and pageant was well attended.

In spite of cold and threatening snow the Winter Fest was a great success. The many local venders were there to show off their wares and sell to those who needed the things they had made.
