  • Palabras Pintorescas: Wrapping up the summer season

Is summer really coming to an end? Time does fly when one is having fun, and fun we have had here at the ranch once again. Sharing nature’s bounty and nature’s beauty with our little people sure is fun.
The little people can’t count hummingbirds buzzing my three feeders any better than I can. But they did take a lots of pictures of them, possibly for show-and-tell at school in the Washington D.C. area.

  • Mora County Notebook: U.S. Sen. Tom Udall visits Mora

Monday afternoon a large group of the Mora citizens met at the St Gertrude’s Parish Hall to have a round table discussion with U.S. Senator Tom Udall. The meeting was hosted by Collaborative Visions, an organization promoting substantial economic growth for their rural community by bringing everyone to the table to listen to one another and work together.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Remembering Petey Stark Salman

My father’s Webster’s Dictionary (very well worn, obviously carried in his vest pocket around 1915 or so) uses very few words to define a word. I just looked up “grief.”

This dictionary describes grief in two words: sorrow; misfortune. Yes I am sad as I write this column.

  • Mora County Notebook: Fatal plane crash site gets visitors

Editor’s Note: In last week’s column the San Miguel/Mora County Fair princess Bailey Montoya’s father was inadvertently left out. Montoya’s father is Roy Montoya.

Fifty years ago on Jan. 30, 1963 a B-52 bomber crashed in the mountains between Chacon and Guadalupita. The airmen were on a routine practice mission coming down low, when the high winds in the area tore the plane apart and scattered it over the mountains for six to eight miles.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Raining on what others call ‘parched land’

It is raining as I write this. We are blessed yet again. Our vast, huge crop of weeds and wildflowers say thank you, muchas gracias to our weather gods as well.
Yes, I live in an isolated mountain canyon. But that doesn’t mean the outside world can’t find me. I have two copies of the front page weather report sent to me in the last 48 hours, no less.
One was from the Idaho Statesman and the other was from the Tucson Daily newspaper. Everyone knows I like weather stories, but I wish this weather story wasn’t true, or front page news.

  • Mora County Notebook: Mora County youths perform well at fair

The Mora 4-H members showed what a hard working skilled group they, their parents and leaders are when one sees the results of the judging at the Mora/San Miguel County Fair. There were champions in several categories. Also the Fair Queen and Princess were from Mora.

The Ashe Ranch of Mora was the winner of the Ranch Rodeo.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Couldn’t put down this Mora County-based book

Well, I never dreamed I’d be reviewing a just-published book about Mora County and the somewhat historic events that happened here and in Alaska a few decades ago.
“Pilgrim’s Wilderness: A true story of faith and madness on the Alaskan Frontier,” has just been published by Crown Press, and is written by Tom Kizzia, a longtime reporter for the Alaskan Newspaper, the Anchorage Daily News.
