  • Palabras Pintorescas - Fire season is around the corner

Once in a while (not often anymore) an old time truck will backfire as it meanders down our road here in the mountains. The  modern vehicle engine obviously is more efficient.

Another backfire definition has to do with actual fires. Backfires are used to stop both prairie and forest fires, and that practice has been around at least 150 years or more.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Bullfighting compared to ballet

There is a new kid in the corral, a different kid to some. To us who live on a ranch, he is a welcome addition. He is a shiny black yearling black Angus bull. He has a fancy background, and a fairly light birth weight, very important when one has a working ranch, as in a cow/calf operation.

He jumped out of the trailer, ready to take on that old bull that has served this ranch so well for a long time. The old bull probably outweighs him by a thousand pounds, so it didn’t take long for him to realize he’d just be friends, fighting is for another day and time.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Childhood memories of the Castañeda

Newsworthy items pop up daily around here. With a good radio, two or three newspapers and a television, not much gets past us way up here in the mountains. Some of the news is exciting,  to say the least.

Our beloved, sleeping Castañeda is about to awaken once again! I have so many fond memories of long-ago times spent at that grand hotel. A trip to town from our Valmora home was always an event, particularly for sweet brother bill and I in the 1940’s.

  • Mora County Notebook - As the winds blow in Chacon

The strong winds recently blew a barn down and scattered the parts all over. It is now just a pile of rubble as all of the pieces have been gathered up and put in a pile by some of the family.

They did not want the boards to destroy other property as they blew around in the strong winds.
