  • Palabras Pinturescas: All’s right with the world when green chile arrives

All is right in my small world, and in my kitchen when the new crop of New Mexico green chile arrives in our local stores.

Yes, the chile roasters have been parked by the store entrances for a while now, and there is no better smell, aroma anywhere to match this very special perfume.

It takes an old fashioned wood cookstove to properly roast green chile, in my book. My wonderful neighbors and my mother always did it the same way.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Decades-old newspaper yields some interesting historic data

Suddenly our big yard is full of birds. Yes, the barn swallows like our many barn and building sites here, and now all of their kids just left the nest and have learned to fly. The parents are quick to dive-bomb any of us who venture out, and the babies are trying their luck at catching anything that looks like a bug to eat. May they fly safely and unimpeded as they migrate to their warmer winter habitats.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Sacks of sugar fail to quench thirst of many hummingbirds

If it is August, some annual events are totally predictable. Dozens, and I do mean dozens, of hummingbirds have found my five feeders on my desk. A five-pound sack of sugar only lasts a day and at least a dozen more hummers jam each feeder. An occasional wasp also stops by for a treat, but I quickly swat him away. I’m sure we also have nests hidden in our lilac bushes, but I have not seen one. Oh, what tough little birds these cute things are!

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Apartment number seven suddenly gets a facelift

Yes, I wrote this column nine years ago. And now the dear little wrens are back and the housekeeping chores are back in full swing. I realized I couldn’t paint a better word picture (palabra pintorescas) than this so perhaps it is worthy of a rerun. And yes, I discussed it with the little birds and they agreed with me. They were too busy nest building to be interrupted by some character carrying a notepad and a pencil.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Remembering good old days of Mom and Pop grocery stores

The newspaper collection, housed in an old Del Monte canned green beans box provides all sorts of memories for me.

The Oct. 16, 2002 edition of the Optic has historic column headed with “Lost in 1959” by David Wesner. He says “Many Las Vegans remember the Mom and Pop stores of yesteryear. It was a phenomenon of the late 1950s and early 1960s largely — in a small way. Mom and Pop grocery stores.
