  • Palabras Pintorescas - Memories of the Mountain View Dairy

Here is a photograph, of a picture from times long ago. That is my late father-in-law, Boge Bartley, proudly standing in front of the Bartley family delivery truck.

Boge (his proper name was John Fitzhugh) started the dairy in the 1940s. He and his wife, Anna Bell Bartley bought a pasture on the main road leading to Montezuma.

There were no buildings or improvements there, but electricity and city water were available right next to the road.

  • Mora County Notebook - Mora group hosts annual seed exchange

The Mora Grows Seed Library hosted its second annual seed exchange and first seed saving class on April 6 in Mora. The event was sponsored by Los de Mora Local Growers Cooperative and Collaborative Visions. The Seed Broadcast van was parked outside the building with its seed collection and recording equipment eager to record the local seed stories.

Seed exchange and a pot luck lunch opened the day, followed by seed-saving techniques. Different presenters brought much life by addressing issues gardeners and farmers face today.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Santuario de Chimayo evokes poetic memories

“In Flanders Field the Poppies grow, between the crosses row on row.” I remember when I had to learn, to recite that poem in grade school so long ago. I now have a new twist on that old poetic line.

“In El Santuario de Chimayo the crosses blow on fences row on row.” Sweet Brother Bill’s oldest son Shane spent some time here recently and he (my nephew) and I did  a tour of Northern New Mexico, just for fun.

The students who participated in the spelling bee this year were enthusiastic and worked hard to learn to spell the Spanish words. Rita Sanchez, their teacher, said that they were very motivated and spent extra time practicing.
