  • Palabras Pintorescas: Timely tips from 1917 Christmas magazine

I was all set to write a column about our areas “Rails and Trails events” around here (mostly in Las Vegas in the 1980s and ‘90s). That will be postponed because I just discovered a 1917 American Cookery magazine, the December issue and there are some nifty hints and ideas published so long ago.

  • Plenty of events for the weekend

Mora County residents get ready, this weekend is going to be full of fun this weekend in Mora as the Christmas invasion has begun.

Tonight (Friday) starting at 6 p.m. at Tapetas de Lana in Mora will host “Noche de Familia.” The evening will consist of a movie, food and other fun activities.

This event is sponsored by the Mora County DWI program. Everyone is welcome to this free event that promotes sobriety and family.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Thankfully, ‘tis time to try Tamera’s tasty tamales

My buddy and fellow columnist, Art Trujillo, thinks that flying fruitcake will land on his day of retirement. Be careful what you wish for, Art. You might get several fruitcakes before then. My readers are always thoughtful and generous, I’ve learned. No further fruitcake columns are in the works here at the ranch, but I just discovered, in a treasure trove of very old letters sent to my mother in 1944, no less, a recipe for onion cake.

  • Mora County Notebook - Organizations working to improve park

Morphy Lake State Park is usually booming during the summer months, but in the winter it is quiet, as ducks can be seen gently floating across the calm chilly water.

For numerous Mora County farmers the park means a way to store water that will be used to irrigate their fields during the growing season. The winter months are crucial to the farmers as the moisture is needed in the spring and summer.

But there is a slight problem.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Moberg garage could fix just about anything

I have an audience of one as I write this column on Nov. 17. It is 10:30 in the morning and it has warmed up to 32 degrees. It was 1 degree at 8 this morning and there are 7 to 8 inches of snow on the ground. The snow has finally melted off the deck railing and because it is iron it is obviously the only warm perch around here at the moment.

My visitor is a very cold mourning dove. Her feathers are fluffed out to the maximum, and she is watching the houseflies that have suddenly come alive and are crawling up the picture windows here.
