  • Who ‘dun’ it? Mora theater company, that’s who

“Murder on the Petulant Express” was brilliant. Oh true, some New York theater snob would probably have sniffed, but this isn’t New York, and we are thankfully lacking in a preponderance of snobs in this area. The fledgling thespians of Mora Area Community Theater put together an outstanding dinner/mystery, performed at the Mora Valley Baptist Church last Friday evening. If this event is any indication, the company of Mora players has a bright future.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Farmers, ranchers worry about lack of snow this winter

What is going on, weather-wise? We should be showing snow this morning, as I write this. The temperature is 55 degrees and wind gusts have topped 50 miles per hour. This translates into all available soil moisture being sucked out of the ground. Those of us who are farmers and wildland firefighters are now very worried, rightfully so.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Longing for return of Montezuma pond

I am always happy to hear from my readers and they often share interesting stories with me. A reader asked me recently about the availability of that so- much-fun sport, ice-skating at the skating pond just north of Montezuma. Yes, folks, we used to have a fabulous skating pond up there.

The loss of this treasure (to many of us) is very real. The last and bottom dam on the Gallinas River is that canyon was large by many standards. The big cliff just to the south of the dam shaded it. This ideal location provided all the necessary elements to freeze thick, clear ice.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Abundant snowfall blesses Mora area

Oh no! I’m back  — full of enthusiasm to write and record my take and memory of things, places, and events in our beautiful and fun area. A misstep back in November put me in the hospital (Alta Vista) and a great rehab center for a few days. I was able to come home (my house has handicap access, fortunately) and twice-weekly physically therapy with experts in the field have me almost back to normal once again. Thank you all for such wonderful care!
