  • Palabras Pinturescas: Unseasonably warm temps create longing for moisture

I will admit I am one of those news hounds who doesn’t always get the lesser sections of our newspapers. My two papers, the Optic and the Albuquerque Journal come to our ranch mailbox and I sometimes get the Saturday, Sunday and Monday Journal on Monday. I will admit I don’t always get all of the various sections of those papers read.

However, the Nov. 12 (Saturday) Journal tucked in an article that caught my eye (no surprise there) because I live in the middle of a heavily forested mountain here at Gascon.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Annual time changes don’t faze milk cows

This old ranch and our animals have survived yet another “move the clocks back an  hour” event. There are some stray cats who have moved into our hay barn and yes, I feel them every morning (along with the daily lecture about the necessity to catch those pesky gophers who try to change our fields one mound at a time). A neighbor asked me if I liked daylight saving time and I had to be  honest. My inner clock runs on the same time, month after month, year after year.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Book explores Las Vegas history

What a fun time this is for me? Joseph A. Lordi’s brand new book, “Las Vegas New Mexico” became available here in Las Vegas at about the time I celebrated my recent birthday. Thank you, friends and family for the gift cards, and yes, I have a copy of this incredible book.

It will take me a long time to devour it. This is not just another traveling log or history book about this area. It is a big book in many ways! It weights about 6 pounds and has 416 pages of photographs and text.
