The Memorial Middle School Bands will be host to a Spring Concert at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24 at the Memorial Middle School gymnasium.

Performances begin with a combination of students from Sierra Vista, Los Niños, and Legion Park Elementary schools.

Also performing is the Memorial Middle School sixth grade band and the concert will culminate with Memorial’s more advanced band.

Fort Union National Monument will host two all-day Junior Ranger Camps beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m on Thursday, June 9 and Friday, June 10.

For children ages 7-12, the camps will introduce youngsters to the diverse history and natural splendor of Fort Union through hands-on games, activities, and ranger led programs. The June 9 Junior Ranger Camp is geared for children ages seven to nine and the June 10th camp is geared for children ages ten to 12. Both camps are free of charge.

Every year the Tree Board of the City of Las Vegas and the City get together to plant a tree and celebrate National Arbor Day. Last year nearly 50 small trees were planted in Marrujo Park on Commerce Street.

The city has provided a source of effluent water for the new trees. This year several of last year’s trees will be replaced and a new larger tree will be planted in the same park.

Mayor Alfonso Ortz will proclaim Arbor Day in Las Vegas at 4 p.m. this Friday, April 29 at the park. The public is invited.

Well-known theater activist, actor and playwright Cynthia Ruffin is teaching on the New Mexico Highlands University campus through April 29 through the university’s Nina Telsa Ballen Visiting Professor Program.

Ruffin will also present a free public lecture, Ungagged, at 6 p.m. April 25 in the Leveo Sanchez Lecture Hall in Donnelly Library. Ruffin will lead the April 29 performance of Voices of Transformation at Sala de Madrid.

Ruffin was born in Montreal and trained at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.
