  • Fall Flight Festival at refuge each Nov. Sunday

    Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge, east of Las Vegas, will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Sunday in November the Traditional Annual Fall Flight Festival featuring a 4-1/2 mile self-guided auto drive. This tour allows visitors to enjoy the  spaciousness of the short-grass prairie in areas of the refuge that are not open for general public use the rest of the year.

  • Concert Choir show Sunday with holiday favorites

    The New Mexico Highlands University Concert Choir will present a “Holiday Favorites” concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4 at Ilfeld Auditorium, 900 University Ave.

    The concert choir will perform pieces such as Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Winter Wonderland, Silent Night, and The First Noel, among other holiday favorites.

    Andre Garcia-Nuthmann, director of Highlands University’s choral program, will direct the concert.

    Lydia Madrick of the Santa Fe Symphony is the piano accompanist.

    Once again, Las Vegas First Independent Business Alliance is sponsoring the Cross the Bridge shopping promotion beginning Nov. 1 and running through Dec. 24. Everyone is invited to join in the effort to promote local shopping and to encourage a shift in shopping habits toward locally owned businesses.

    Several attorneys were honored at a luncheon last Friday for their work in providing free legal services to needy people in their community.

    Recognized at the event were David Silva, Suzanne Gaulin, Danelle Smith, Robert Sanchez, Craig Fretwell, Oneida L’Esperance, Wilma Brown, Martin Lopez, Art Bustos, Nick Leger, Judith Kilpatrick and Anna Aragon.

    New Mexico Chief Justice Petra Jimenez Maes thanked local attorneys for their pro bono service in the 4th Judicial District, which covers San Miguel, Mora and Guadalupe counties.

  • Celebrity chef Mark Anthony to cook up free meal next week

    A few years ago Mark Anthony was an Executive Chef for the largest hospital operating system in the country.
    He was also at his largest weight of 305 pounds. As he looked around at the patients in the hospitals, he discovered one common element to most of their conditions; they were almost all there for cholesterol-related problems. He thought to himself, “I’d better do something or I’m going to end up being one of the people in this hospital.”

    Ben Ortega, son of Ben and Bernice Ortega of Rociada, has been appointed to senior vice president and Lead Project Manager of Development at Penn-Florida Companies.
    His real estate development career spans nearly 30 years, and he is an expert in managing class “A” multifamily projects from the initial planning stage to final product delivery.
