  • Promotion offers chance to win $1,000

    Once again, Las Vegas First Independent Business Alliance is sponsoring the Cross the Bridge shopping promotion beginning Nov. 1 and running through Dec. 24. Everyone is invited to join in the effort to promote local shopping and to encourage a shift in shopping habits toward locally owned businesses.

  • Attorneys honored for providing free legal services to needy

    Several attorneys were honored at a luncheon last Friday for their work in providing free legal services to needy people in their community.

    Recognized at the event were David Silva, Suzanne Gaulin, Danelle Smith, Robert Sanchez, Craig Fretwell, Oneida L’Esperance, Wilma Brown, Martin Lopez, Art Bustos, Nick Leger, Judith Kilpatrick and Anna Aragon.

    New Mexico Chief Justice Petra Jimenez Maes thanked local attorneys for their pro bono service in the 4th Judicial District, which covers San Miguel, Mora and Guadalupe counties.

  • Celebrity chef Mark Anthony to cook up free meal next week

    A few years ago Mark Anthony was an Executive Chef for the largest hospital operating system in the country.
    He was also at his largest weight of 305 pounds. As he looked around at the patients in the hospitals, he discovered one common element to most of their conditions; they were almost all there for cholesterol-related problems. He thought to himself, “I’d better do something or I’m going to end up being one of the people in this hospital.”

    Ben Ortega, son of Ben and Bernice Ortega of Rociada, has been appointed to senior vice president and Lead Project Manager of Development at Penn-Florida Companies.
    His real estate development career spans nearly 30 years, and he is an expert in managing class “A” multifamily projects from the initial planning stage to final product delivery.

    The Las Vegas Citizens’ Committee for Historic Preservation invites the public to nominate persons and businesses that have significantly improved their buildings this past year for CCHP’s annual preservation awards.

    Awards and recognition will be given for renovations, restorations and general improvements of historic homes and buildings throughout Las Vegas.  Recognition may also be given to individuals who have made a significant impact on preservation in Las Vegas.  

  • Inaugural Las Vegas Paint Out begins today

    Those who like to make art out of doors or who think they might like to try it are invited to register for the first Las Vegas Paint Out, today (Wednesday) through Saturday.  The Las Vegas Plein Air Club and the Las Vegas Arts Council are coordinating this outdoor painting event to inspire local artists and to introduce others to our unique town and its environs.

  • Annual enchilada dinner fundraiser next Thursday

    The annual enchilada dinner to fund Mustard Seed grants to non-profit groups in Las Vegas and the surrounding area takes place on Thursday, Oct. 11 at the Hillcrest Restaurant.

    Next Thursday’s dinner marks the 14th anniversary of the Mustard Seed program sponsored by the local First United Presbyterian Church. The church devotes all profits from the dinner to funding projects by other organizations in the community.

  • ‘Lyrical Passion’ concert to feature HU music faculty

    New Mexico Highlands University music  faculty Linda King and Andre Garcia-Nuthmann will present a concert, Lyrical Passion, at 3 p.m. on Oct. 7, featuring the music of Schumann, Brahms and Franck.

    King, a concert pianist, and Garcia-Nuthmann, a tenor vocalist, will be joined by Krzysztof Zimowki, a violinist who is the concertmaster for the New Mexico Philharmonic and the Opera Southwest Orchestra.
