  • Radio event helps mentoring program

    There was a lot of excitement and good-natured cajoling going on over the KFUN-KLVF radio airwaves as friends and neighbors challenged each other to donate just a little more money during the Big Brothers Big Sisters Radiothon on Saturday.


    Radio station owners Joseph and Loretta Baca opened their doors to Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteers for a two-hour show aimed at raising money to keep the program up and running.


    Community coordinator Maggie Romigh said more than $3,000 was raised in two hours.

    Doug Hughes is a medical doctor; Aileen Torres Hughes, a nurse. It sounds like the perfect combination, and perhaps it is, for singly and together, this couple has helped provide medical assistance for locals and for thousands of people in impoverished areas of the world.


    Theirs is not a hemmed-in or office occupation or preoccupation.


    The active lives of this medical couple reflect an incarnation of the term teleology — being directed toward an end or shaped by a purpose.

  • Mentor of the Month: Director seeks more time in classroom

    Conni Reichert, director of Allied Health Sciences at Luna Community College, has taught hundreds of students throughout her years as a nursing instructor.

    Reichert, a native of Iowa, started her career at Luna in 1999 as a part-time nursing instructor following a self-directed tour of New Mexico with her husband Steve.


    “We love this area,” Reichert said. “I wanted to teach nursing. We also found that Las Vegas had a rich post-secondary education infrastructure for our children.”

  • Above and Beyond: Student rep plans to go into Marines

    Westly Cole was sworn in Tuesday as the student representative on the Las Vegas City Schools board for the 2010-11 school year.
    Cole became a Las Vegas resident during his second semester as an eighth-grader at Memorial Middle School. He said since then, he considers himself a friend to all groups and cliques.


    Cole’s voice can be heard every morning via the Robertson High School intercom system, a job he has held for the past three years. He is also a reporter for the school newspaper.
