  • Donnelly Library offers spring reading group

    The New Mexico Highlands University Donnelly Library presents a free spring reading and discussion group titled “Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys.”

    The books are available at Donnelly Library, thanks to a National Endowment for the Humanities grant awarded to the library for the Muslim Journeys collection.

    All of the authors featured in the current Muslim Journeys discussion group have received acclaim and awards for their best-selling books.

  • Annual Sweetheart Dance Saturday at Plaza Hotel

    Rough Rider Blues Sweetheart Dance and Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Museum will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Plaza Hotel Ballroom.

    Come listen and dance to the blues tunes of the Low Down Daddies. This event is the Friends of the Las Vegas City Museum and Rough Rider Memorial Collection Third Annual Sweetheart Dance and Annual Meeting. It is a special tribute of appreciation to the Las Vegas greater community for the many years of encouragement and support.

  • LANL Foundation chair to head grantmakers association

    Susan Herrera, CEO of the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation, has been elected chair of the Board of the New Mexico Association of Grantmakers.

    The association serves foundations and private philanthropists throughout New Mexico. It hosted a conference “Finding Common Ground: Joining Together to Improve New Mexico” late last year at Tamaya Resort for grantmakers and nonprofits. The conference was partially funded by a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.

  • ‘A Baroque Christmas’ starts tonight in Santa Fe

    Santa Fe Pro Musica will present its holiday tradition, “A Baroque Christmas” today through Tuesday at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. each evening at the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe.

    Winter is a time of celebration for families of many faiths. Gathering in the warmth of the fire, we tell stories and sing songs of the ages. Outside, the scent of chimney smoke lingers on the cool, crisp air, as the last leaves fall from the trees. In this atmosphere, we celebrate the passing of an old year and the coming of a new.

  • Luna students donate quilts to foster children

    Each fall semester the quilting and sewing students of the Luna Community College trades department donate gifts to CASA kids, the foster care advocate program.  This year they made 23 blankets and quilts from donations of fabric and quilting supplies from individuals and students. The Silver Threads Quilters, a group made up of LCC quilting students, also gave materials and time to the project.  

  • Association scholarship fundraiser Thursday

    The New Mexico Highlands University Alumni Association presents a silent auction scholarship fundraiser from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday in the ballroom of the university’s Student Union Building at the northwest corner of National Avenue and Eighth Street.

    The public is welcome at the fundraiser. There will be free cookies and punch, as well as entertainment by the Highlands University Mariachi Vaqueros de la Sierra. Benny Lucero directs the mariachis.

    The New Mexico Highlands University HU Singers will perform a medley of songs from the musicals Cabaret and Chicago 7:30 p.m. today (Friday) and Saturday in Ilfeld Auditorium, 900 University Ave.

    And All That Jazz is a full musical production that includes original choreography, sets and costumes.

    Andre García-Nuthmann, director of Highlands University’s choral program in the Department of Music, is the musical director and piano accompanist.
