In terms of firepower on the field, Amber Yara had plenty to say Saturday for the Robertson girls’ soccer team.
But the Belen Eagles had even more to scream about in reply.

Belen, one of the better programs in Class 4A, doubled up the visiting Lady Cardinals by a 6-3 count to spoil Robertson’s season opener.

Yara had a part in all three Robertson scores, putting two in the back of the net herself and assisting teammate Caitlin Diefendorf on another RHS goal.

Diefendorf, who was the second-leading scorer in New Mexico girls’ soccer last season, had one goal and one assist.

And Robertson frosh Victoria Valdez contributed one assist.

Losing their season opener wasn’t such a bad omen for the Lady Cardinals in 2012. The team really didn’t lose much after that, storming to a District 2 1A-3A championship, then made a postseason run that ended in the state semifinals with a competitive loss to eventual champion Hope Christian.

Coach Ian Williamson and his squad were to play at Roswell Goddard on Tuesday, then travel to Rehoboth Christian for a weekend tournament. Scheduled foes include Hatch Valley, Navajo Prep and Rehoboth.

Robertson’s boys host mighty Sandia Prep on Friday afternoon.
