Wondering about a building south of LV

6 replies [Last post]

Hi, I got to visit LV back in 2010, and then was able to come back again this month.  Very nice town!

As we drove up 84 south of town in 2010, I noted a building or structure being constructed, and I saw a couple weeks ago that it is apparently still being built.  It's about 30 miles south of town.

I got a couple good photos of it from the road.  What is this?  I thought at first it was a church or something like that,  but on a closer view I don't think so.  The photos are at the following links.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Cheers, Bill

Structure visible from US 84 south of Las Vegas

The structure in the photograph is not the Scientology facility. It is an earthwork project of the New York artist Charles Ross. Ross has been working on this project for the last 40 years and says it is nearing completion. Star Axis is an architectonic earth/star sculpture constructed with the geometry of the stars; earth-to-star alignments built to human scale. It offers an intimate experience of how the earth's environment extends into the space of the stars.

Ross is known for using sunlight and starlight as the source for his art. According to his web site, he creates creates large-scale prisms to project solar spectrum into architectural spaces; focuses sunlight into powerful beams to create solar burn works; draws the quantum behavior of light with dynamite; and works with a variety of other media including photography and video.

His work is featured in Las Vegas on the campuses of Highlands University and the United World College.

The Scientology facility is northeast of this structure by many miles. I do not believe it is visible from any paved road, although I have heard that commercial airline passengers and pilots see it from the air.

Look for Star Axis at Staraxis.com

Harold, thanks for the information. I checked out the website; that's an interesting project being built.

I appreciate it.

The Answer is...

A Church of Scientology Compound. They are building on it, so it looks different now than it did a few years ago.. not sure what the new part shown in your pictures is... see some of these related links..

Questions: If you're headed towards Las Vegas from Santa Fe, will it be on the right or left side of the road? East or west of Ribera? East or west of Glorieta? East or west of Starvation Peak?

Structure South of LV

Hi, David. I was on 84 coming from I-40 north to Las Vegas.

The road location is 35.24631, -105.11 (N35 14' 48.3 W105 6' 37.6).

From using Bing/Google maps, the structure itself is at 35.26446, -105.08724 (N 35 15' 52" W 105 5' 14.1").

I appreciate the help.

Thanks for the coordinates.

Thanks for the coordinates. Now I have a better idea of where to look. While I'm on the subject, how did we ever get by without GPS? Well, first you walk down that arroyo about half a mile ‘til you get to this dead Piñon tree. Then you walk to the rusty car door that is leaning up against a rock. Then you look up across the valley and there it is about two miles away. If you squint real hard, you can barely see it….
