Leroy “Caro” Armijo has gotten to like exposing his West Las Vegas cross country teams to the course at the annual Jemez Valley Invitational each fall.

“Our times were different this week,” he said. “But it’s a different course. It’s rugged. A lot of hills.”

“There’s one big hill, and if you don’t get out in front of it, you’ll get behind, and I don’t mean 100 yards behind. If you end up behind a slow runner, you end up losing a lot of time.”

West’s varsity girls managed to place sixth and the boys seventh in their respective races.

“We did all right,” Armijo said. “There were a lot of teams.”

Moises Coca shined individually and was the lone WLV competitor to make the top 10 in a race. He crossed the finish line in 19 minutes and 15 seconds.

Mighty Laguna-Acoma rolled to victory in the boys’ varsity race, its 20 team points easily besting second-place St. Pius X of Albuquerque (62). Sandia Prep, East Mountain, Los Lunas and Santa Fe Indian School finished second through sixth, respectively, in front of the Dons. Trailing the West boys were Estancia, Bosque, Bernalillo, Coronado and host Jemez Valley.

St. Pius prevailed on the girls’ side with 30 team points, ahead of Los Lunas, Sandia Prep, Santa Fe Indian, Bosque and West. Behind the Lady Dons were Jemez Valley, Estancia and Laguna-Acoma.

WLV will compete in the Manzano Invitational this coming Saturday in Albuquerque.
