West Las Vegas High School Principal Gene Parson told a spirited crowd at the 2008 homecoming pep rally that this was one of the most fun-filled and best homecoming weeks he’s seen at the school in many years.
Student council president Christa Lucero and members Enrique Archuleta, Jessica Blea, Brittani Broman and Jamie Archuleta acted as masters of ceremony overseeing a pep rally that was filled with games, a student versus staff and alumni dance off, and cheerleading and dance team performances.
During the planning stages, Lucero said, “We’re bringing back a lot of old traditions. That was our goal for this year — to bring back a lot of old spirit and get the school and the town involved again.”
One of the special moments came when the football team honored their parents and loved ones with corsages provided by the school board.
The evening ended with a drum line leading the crowd from the Gillie Lopez Gym to the site of a huge bonfire. Parson said the school had not had a bonfire since the 1990s. This year’s theme is “West Las Vegas Olympics” in honor of the recent Beijing Games. Teacher John Duran even built an Olympic-like torch for the bonfire.
Friday’s homecoming parade will begin at 1 p.m. at Plaza. The Dons will host the Cuba Rams at 7 p.m. at Perkins Stadium.
