Volleyball teams from West Las Vegas (15-8) and Mora (17-5) will join other state hopefuls on Thursday, when the state championship tournaments begin in Rio Rancho.
Tourneys begin with pool play on Thursday morning; performance in pool play will determine bracket pairings, and bracket play will commence later in the day. Pool matches are two games each, played to 25.
WLV, coached by Mary Bustos, is a No. 7 seed in Class 3A and will compete in Pool B along with No. 2 and district nemesis Pojoaque Valley plus No. 10 Sandia Prep. That pool will begin head-to-head, round-robin matches at 8 a.m. Thursday at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho. In other pools, No. 1 Hope Christian, No. 8 Raton and No. 9 Lovington are in Pool A; No. 3 Portales, No. 6 Shiprock and No. 11 Ruidoso are in Pool C; and No. 4 Silver, No. 5 Santa Fe Indian and No. 12 Bloomfield are in Pool D.
Mora, coached by Jacquelyn Sanchez, is a No. 8 seed in Class 2A and will be part of Pool A along with No. 1 Bosque and No. 9 Eunice. That pool is set to start at 8 a.m. Thursday at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho. In Pool B, it’s No. 2 Texico, No. 7 Cobre and No. 10 Santa Fe Prep. In Pool C, it’s No. 3 Santa Rosa, No. 6 Dexter and No. 11 Hatch Valley. And in Pool D, it’s No. 4 Navajo Prep, No. 5 Laguna-Acoma and No. 12 Cuba.
Tickets to pool play are $5. For bracket play, each round charges $8 general admission, $5 students and seniors. Day passes are available for $12. Only cash will be accepted on site. Online, tickets will be available via TicketLeap.com.
Bracket play matches for Class 3A will start at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Star Center. Bracket play matches for Class 2A will begin at 5:30 and 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Cleveland High’s gym.
The tournaments run through Saturday.
