In a matchup between two area teams hoping to reach the state tournament in November, West Las Vegas pulled out a four-set win over Mora on Wednesday night at the Gillie Lopez Gymnasium.
Coach Brian Gurule’s Lady Dons prevailed 25-15, 18-25, 27-25 and 25-18. West improved to 3-4 overall; Mora fell to 4-4.
Perhaps toughened by a recent clash with Class 4A power Goddard, the Lady Dons controlled game one in a 25-15 win.
But the Rangerettes stormed back, looking considerably more cohesive than they had in an early-season defeat at Robertson. They took game two 25-18 to tie the match.
Mora’s momentum carried into game three, and the visitors had game point at 24-21. But West rallied to tie the contest twice and then steal victory, 27-25, on a Linda Esquibel kill.
Mora led 5-2 in game four before Megan Martinez stepped to the service line for the Lady Dons. Vanessa Lucero got rolling with four kills during a surge that lifted West to a 10-7 lead. Martinez served an ace in that run.
West did not give up the lead after that. A block by Esquibel and Kathleen Trujillo made it a seven-point margin at 18-11.
Jessica Garcia’s kill stopped the run and gave Mora some hope. The Rangerettes got within five a couple of times, and the score was 22-17 on a kill by Brandi Romero.
Esquibel ended the game with a spike on match point.
The Lady Dons and Robertson’s Lady Cardinals will be among the participants in this weekend’s Tournament of Champions in Santa Fe. The Rangerettes are headed to a tourney in Cimarron.
