Watrous was booming on Saturday for Watrous Day at the village park. Several hundred attended the celebration which included a free barbecue of beans, meat, and bread served around noon, along with music by Quemoso, and a horseshoe tournament.
The event was started several years ago by a group of people including Johnny Duran, Richard Garcia, Nappy Duran. On Saturday, the attendees ranged from 88-year-old Jose Lopez to Kendan Coca, 10 months.
The meal is traditionally cooked underground. The group cooked the meat underground starting on Friday evening until around noon Saturday.
Wagon Mound holds a similar event Labor Day weekend during its Bean Day celebration, which kicks off with a bean cleaning get-together.
