The first of a number of community efforts to spruce up the Meadow City will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Plaza Park, with the Great American Cleanup.

According to Diego Trujillo, coordinator of local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, “All the volunteers need to do is register, help clean up, and get treated to a free lunch.”

Cleaning tools, trash bags and gloves will be provided by the organization. Trujillo said that depending on the number of volunteers, plans are to begin cleaning around the Plaza Park area, and, if sufficient members of the public show up, to fan out to streets that adjoin the Plaza.

Participants are asked to sign in at the park at 9 a.m., at which time they will receive a ticket that entitles them to a free sandwich, water and soft drinks. Subway, one of the sponsors of the event, is providing several six-foot submarine sandwiches.

Others donating to the cleanup are Mayor Alfonso Ortiz, Lowe’s Supermarket and Traveler’s Cafe.

Trujillo said that he hopes Saturday’s cleanup will provide the impetus for other such projects during the spring and summer. A cleanup of the Gallinas River is also being planned.
