West Las Vegas’ Dons will try to prove they are on the rise and a much better team than a year ago. And Robertson’s Cardinals will look to put last week’s painful loss to St. Michael’s behind them as they remain hopeful for a fourth straight District 2-3A title.
Such are the storylines for Saturday’s Vegas Bowl, the annual renewal of the crosstown gridiron rivalry that has captivated the community for nearly a half century. (See special Vegas Bowl supplement for more.)
As lopsided as the RHS-WLV series has been in recent times, fans almost certainly will pack Cardinal Stadium Saturday.
But there are plenty of other big sporting events this weekend. Robertson’s soccer teams are in Bernalillo Friday and Saturday, facing uphill battles in the first weekend of the state tournament. Also Saturday, RHS and WLV runners visit Pojoaque Valley for the district meets. Mora hosts Santa Fe Prep in the district 4-2A volleyball final. And New Mexico Highlands’ football team is in Kearney, Neb., for a tough one.
