Pecos’ Yeshemabet Turner added to her long list of athletic accolades on Monday, cracking the top three in the elite Marilyn Sepulveda Classic.

The meet is an annual, invitation-only affair reserved for the top high school track and field competitors across the state, regardless of school size. Much like the Joe Vivian Classic in wrestling, it combines many of the state’s top athletes for a “best of the best” competition. Great Friends of UNM Track — also site of the state finals — hosts the meet.

Turner placed third in the girls’ long jump with a distance of 17-8.5 (Clovis’ Anteisha Brown’s 18-3.25 won the meet). Turner also was third in the triple jump with a 37-9 (Highland’s Ebony Owens won with a 38-7.75).

West Las Vegas’ Linda Esquibel was sixth in the triple jump (35-9.5).

Two other local athletes were expected to compete but did not end up going.

Estevan Vigil and Daniel Martinez of Robertson are state contenders; the former in several events, notably the sprints, long jump and javelin, and the latter in the hurdles.
