When my good friend Manny Lucero sent me a text Saturday morning stating that he and his wife Ita were on their way to Albuquerque, as her brother-in-law, former Optic sports writer Vince Rivera, was being administered last rites, I felt a thump in my chest.

As the day progressed, I would text Manny for updates on Vince’s status. Finally, shortly after 10 p.m. the text message came: “Vince just passed away.”
