Mora High School will host the annual Tri-Cities Boys’ Basketball Tournament, one of the premier small-school events of the hoops season, beginning on Thursday of next week.
The eight-team tournament will run through Saturday, Dec. 29, at Montoya Gym in Mora.
In the opening afternoon session, Santa Rosa plays McCurdy at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27. That game will be followed by Pecos vs. Escalante at 3 o’clock.
In the nightcap, defending Class B state champion Wagon Mound tangles with Monte del Sol at 5:30 p.m. Then the host Rangers take on district rival Peñasco at 7:30.
Consolation semifinals will play out at 1 and 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28. The Santa Rosa-McCurdy loser plays the Pecos-Escalante loser at 1; the Wagon Mound-Monte del Sol loser gets the Mora-Peñasco loser at 3.
Winners of Thursday’s games play in the semifinals Friday evening, 5:30 and 7:30.
The seventh-place game is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, followed by the consolation bracket final (fifth-place game) at 3. The third-place game tips off at 5:30, and the championship contest starts at 7:30.
Trophies will be awarded to the champion, first- and second runners-up and the consolation bracket champion. Additionally 12 all-tournament team medals and a Most Valuable Player plaque will be presented.
The holiday season is typically loaded with high school basketball tournaments, many of which have long traditions. The 59th annual Stu Clark Tournament takes place Dec. 27-29 at New Mexico Highlands University’s Wilson Complex. Robertson and West Las Vegas will start play on that Thursday evening’s session.
And the RHS girls will be in Roswell for the Goddard tournament Dec. 26-28.
This week, Pojoaque Valley hosts its annual Ben Lujan tournaments for boys’ and girls’ teams.
