Kayla Romero sliced 17 kills past the West Las Vegas defense Tuesday night, leading Class 4A Española Valley over the Lady Dons (3-1) at Gillie Lopez Gym.

The visiting Lady Sundevils won in four games, only falling in the second set of the night.

Game scores were 25-16, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-17 in favor of Española.

Errors by the Lady Dons led to an 0-4 start in game one, and they got no closer than three points the rest of the set.

West’s Jenika Padilla ended one strong volley with a kill to make it 23-16, but a kill by Elana Salazar and an ace by Christinna Naranjo ended the game.

In game two, West gained an 11-6 lead with the help of kills by Padilla and Jaylen Gutierrez. Attacks by Celeste Trujillo,

Reyna Trujillo and Caelin Bustos allowed the Lady Dons to hang on to the lead, which peaked at 22-14 when a Lady Sundevil attack went wide.

WLV led much of game three as well, going up 18-16 on a Reyna Trujillo kill. Then Española took advantage of a couple of miscues, and Romero and Ashlyn Trujillo both connected at the net to nudge the visitors ahead 21-18. A block by Romero wrapped up the game at 25-19.

Game four mirrored game one, with Española scoring the first four points and staying in the lead.

West Las Vegas and coach Mary Bustos were to visit Santa Fe Indian on Thursday, after this issue went to press.
