THUMBS UP! A BUSY WEEKEND
The Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer, but it is also when two of Mora County’s biggest events take place. Both the Cleveland Millfest and Wagon Mound Bean Days are this weekend, giving area residents lots of options for entertainment — and great food. The Millfest is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Cleveland Roller Mill, just north of Mora along NM 518. More than 50 artists will take part in the festival, and there will be several musical performances. Wagon Mound Bean Days kick off Friday evening and run through Monday. Among the highlights will be rodeos and lots of great food. See you there.
THUMBS UP! SAVING A LIFE
Las Vegas utility employees David Marquez and Louie Montaño were recognized by Mayor Alfonso Ortiz and city councilors for saving the life of an elderly woman this past June. The woman was unresponsive when they encountered her lying in her front yard, and they performed CPR. The woman died two months later, but the extra time her family got to spend with her was a priceless gift.
THUMBS UP! SECOND CHANCES
Alejandro Rivera’s Substance Abuse Program is restoring a classic car to be raffled off to raise money to help people with substance abuse problems. It’s fitting that this program is transforming this 1962 Biscayne that was seemingly destined for the scrap heap into a functioning vehicle again, given that the program strives to give people who have been written off a second chance.
THUMBS DOWN! THREE FACING RAPE CHARGES
Three area men were charged with rape in three separate incidents in recent weeks. These individuals are innocent until proven guilty, but the allegations made are troubling.
