THUMBS DOWN - INADEQUATE RESULTS. Nearly 87 percent of New Mexico’s schools — including all but two in San Miguel County, and just one in Mora County — failed to meet federal adequate-yearly-progress standards during the last school year. Such dismal results motivated the state Public Education Department to announce plans to replace the system, if the feds allow it, with a state plan to grade schools A through F instead of with the pass-or-fail approach currently being used.
