Luna Community College students Justin Smith (electronic engineering major) and Rachel Ridgeway (physical sciences major) are two of 16 students throughout New Mexico who have been selected to participate in the Summer Community College Opportunity for Research Experience program for 2012.

Justin and Rachel will spend a month in Las Cruces at New Mexico State University working as research assistants on a NMSU faculty member's cutting edge research project.

The program is funded by the New Mexico Alliance for Minority Participation, which is committed to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities receiving B.S. degrees, as well as graduate degrees, in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.  The program is a National Science Foundation program and one of 35 NSF Alliances nationwide.

In addition to working on their research projects during the summer, Justin and Rachel will also participate in workshops and present their research at the New Mexico AMP Student Research Conference at NMSU on Oct. 5.
