Adrian Rivera was an inside AND outside threat Monday afternoon, hitting four outside shots on his way to 21 points.
Rivera and the West Las Vegas boys’ basketball team cruised to a 74-54 win over Thoreau at Gillie Lopez Gym.
The Dons improved to 10-7 under first-year head coach David “Morgan” Montaño.in the team’s last tuneup before the onset of district play. West plays host to Santa Fe Indian on Wednesday.
Thoreau’s uptempo, equal-opportunity offense gave the Dons all they could handle through most of the first half. After spotting their hosts the game’s first six points, the Hawks embarked on a 13-2 run to go ahead 13-8.
But playing heads-up defense, intercepting a series of Thoreau passes, WLV seized control. Fabian Varela made a couple of shots as the Dons tied the game at 15 to end the first.
In the second period, West outscored the visitors 13-5, punctuating the half with Rivera’s three-pointer from the right corner and a steal that led to Ambrosio Castellano’s layup.
At the break, WLV led 28-20.
Rivera’s basket off a feed from Castellano started the second half scoring and a 20-6 run that left the Dons up 48-26.
The score was 57-34 heading into the fourth period. Keeping up the pace, the Hawks hit a couple of threes in each of the last two quarters but trailed by no fewer than 15 points throughout the fourth.
WLV scoring: Rivera 21; Varela 19; Derek Gold 10; John Martinez 9; Castellano 7; Zack Armijo 4; Tomas Benavidez 2; Ambrosio Tafoya 2.
Also Monday, the WLV girls’ team (12-4) defeated Socorro 48-40 on the road.
It is the third time this season West has beaten Socorro. The Lady Dons won 65-37 on Dec. 4 in the Brian Gallegos Invitational and prevailed 57-44 Dec. 19 in the Ben Lujan Invite.
The Lady Dons open district with a Thursday trip to Santa Fe Indian, followed by a home game Saturday against Raton.
