Students of the Month

Troy Estrada has been named Elks Student of the Month; it was announced by Elks Lodge No. 408.

Estrada, son of Phillip and Carol Estrada, is currently a senior at Robertson High School. He takes part in MESA, tutors for the 21st Century Program after school and is an Earth Team Volunteer at USDA/NRCS. Troy is also the 2010 3A State Individual Runner-Up and 2011 District Champ for varsity wrestling.

Zachary Gallegos has been named Elks Student of the Month. As a senior at West Las Vegas High School, Zachary holds a 4.15 GPA.

He is the son of Ramon and Vicky Gallegos.

Gallegos is a part of many extracurricular activities such as the Hispanic Youth Institute, National Honor Society, Business Professionals of America, Key Club, cross country, MESA, soccer, Science and Agriculture Summer Experience Program, track and field, Student Academic Advancement Institute, Quest Bridge College match Program, and the Semillas de Salud Program.

After graduation Zachary hopes to attend an Ivy college, specifically Rice University, and major in biology while minoring in forensic sciences.

Franceska Alexander has been named Elks Student of the Month. Alexander, 18, is the daughter of Debbie and Joe Alexander of Cleveland, N.M. and is currently a senior at Mora High School.

Alexander has been active in varsity basketball, track, Business Professionals of America, MESA, yearbook, National Honor Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Peer Educators, and has also been Class President the past three years.

Scholastically she has maintained a 3.9 GPA, while also taking dual-enrollment classes, and is graduating at the top of her class.

Upon graduation, Franceska hopes to attend the University of New Mexico to obtain a degree in biology or other health sciences.

Ultimately, she wants to attend medical school to become a doctor/surgeon.

Isaac Hidalgo has been named Student of the Month.

He is the son of Renè and Maricela Hidalgo and holds a 4.07 GPA at West Las Vegas High School.

At West, he takes part in MESA, soccer, mariachi, ski club, band, choir, and National Honor Society.

After graduation Isaac plans to attend New Mexico Highlands University, major in music, and continue to play with Mariachi Paisano Del Valle.

Julia Fernández has been named Student of the Month.

Fernández, daughter of John Fernández and Jenny Nation, is currently a senior at Robertson High School.

She is part of the varsity cheerleading squad as well as secretary/treasurer for the Student Council.
Fernández will be graduating with National Honor Society. Her hobbies include folkloric dancing.

Miranda Garcia has been named Student of the Month by Elks Lodge No.408.

Garcia, daughter of Randy and Annette Garcia, is a senior at Robertson High School.

She has been a member of the Lady Cardinal tennis team for five years and is currently captain.

Miranda has also been a member and captain of the Lady Cardinal basketball team and takes part in National Honor Society. Her hobbies consist of tennis, basketball, school, and spending time with her friends and family.

Steven Salinas has been named Elks Student of the Month. He is the son of Roger and Rosemarie Salinas.

Salinas holds a 3.98 GPA at West Las Vegas High School. He is a part of MESA, National Honor Society, football, track, basketball, and Key Club. Steven was a 2010 Track State Qualifier and 2011 All-District linebacker during football. After graduation he plans to attend New Mexico Highlands University or New Mexico State to become a teacher.

Jerry Gonzales has been named Student of the Month. Currently a senior at Robertson High School, Gonzales is the son of Edward and Dorothy Gonzales.

Gonzales takes part in many extracurricular activities such as FFA, MESA, National Honor Society, and basketball. Some of his hobbies include hunting, fishing, hanging out with friends, and playing sports.

Coy Dolan has been named Student of the Month. A senior at Robertson High School, he is the son of Toby and Audry Dolan.

Dolan is involved in many extracurricular activities such as FFA, football, wrestling, Ranch Horse Association of America, High School Rodeo, and MESA.

Patricia MarkaAnne Garcia has been named Student of the Month.

Garcia, daughter of Christine Ortega-Garcia and the late Peter Garcia, is currently a senior at Robertson High School.

She takes part in volleyball, basketball, and softball, as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Girls' State Delegate.

Some of her hobbies include drawing, reading, sports, and playing with her dogs.

Leandra Garcia has been named Student of the Month.

Her proud parents are Ernest and Arleen Martinez of Las Vegas.

Leandra is currently a senior at West Las Vegas High School. She takes part in many extracurricular activities such as National Honors Society, Key Club, Student Council, and ski club. She is her senior class vice president.

Some of her scholastic awards and honors include winning first place in the VWF Voice of Democracy competition, and receiving scholarships from both the Bank of Las Vegas and the Department of Kentucky and Auxiliary.

After graduation Leandra aspires to attend Luna Community College and major in nursing.
