West Las Vegas Middle School is punishing a student who brought two pellet guns to school this week, a top official said Thursday.

Jim Abreu, superintendent of the West Las Vegas schools, said middle school authorities found out that the boy had brought the two weapons to school Tuesday. Officials had evidence from a security camera of the boy showing off the pellet guns to classmates.

“They (school) officials were going to get him out of a classroom. He heard they were after him. Then he asked to be excused to the bathroom. He stashed them somewhere, but the school tracked them down,” Abreu said.

Abreu said officials had the choice of locking down the school once they determined that there were weapons on campus. But he said officials found it wasn’t necessary to do so.

“A pellet gun isn’t the same as a knife or a gun, but you don’t bring a pellet gun to the schools. I was really happy with the way they handled it. The student will be appropriately disciplined,” Abreu said.
