ALAMOSA, Colo. — The New Mexico Highlands University men’s and women’s cross country teams had a very good start to the 2013 season at the Joe I. Vigil Invitational hosted by Adams State University.
The Cowboy cross country team finished second at the Joe Vigil Invitational, placing three runners in the top 15 and five Cowboys in front of the No. 1 runner from Fort Lewis College (ranked 20th in the nation).
Senior Henrique Chavez, a native of the Mora area and a former star runner for the Rangers, led the way for the ‘Pokes, finishing seventh overall.
The Cowgirls finished third as a team in Alamosa. Newcomer Marie-Jose Ohueu broke the top ten.
This is the best start ever for both squads, coaches said.
“Great race for both squads,” commented Highlands head coach Bob DeVries. “We are off to a great start in 2013.”
The teams will be in action again this coming Friday, Sept. 13, in Lubbock, Texas.
They will race at the Texas Tech Red Raider Open and then travel to Goodwell, Okla., on Saturday, Sept. 14, to race in the Oklahoma Panhandle State University Invitational.
