Cardinals leap into second place; several locals take individual championships in Class 3A state track meet

By Dave Kavanaugh

Daniel Martinez, Jon Adam Dimas, Danielle Gurule, the combination of Abbey Bradley, Chantel Davis, Kristen Montaño and Erica Herrera, and the team of Martinez, Johnathan Lucero, David Coca and Keen Martinez captured individual championship medals over the weekend, and Robertson’s boys surged to a second-place team finish in the Class 3A state track and field championship meet.

The Cardinal boys accumulated 58 team points, trailing only Lovington (67).

Robertson leapfrogged Silver for second place by winning the last event of the day Saturday — the boys’ 1,600-meter relay — with an all-senior lineup.

RHS boys’ head coach Mike Maldonado has said all season that he loves his group because of the individual work ethic and collective team unity displayed. With the possible exception of Martinez, he told a reporter during a recent meet, there are no superstars — just hard-working guys consistently trying to get better. And while his athleticism sets the bar, Martinez’s work ethic and team-first attitude matches the rest, he noted.

In guiding the Cardinals to a top-three placing at state, Maldonado continues a strong recent tradition built by his predecessor Mike Boyle, whom he assisted last year.

Martinez, an all-state quarterback for Robertson’s football team and a five-time state champion in wrestling, completed his history-making prep career with championships in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles, events in which his father Richard excelled back in his high school days. He also ran the fourth leg of the boys’ 1,600-meter relay, joining fellow RHS seniors Lucero, Coca and Keen Martinez (no relation) for a third individual championship. That last event elevated RHS from third place to second.

Dimas scored a first-place medal in the high jump, clearing 6-2, and was second in the triple jump.

Gurule, a West Las Vegas sophomore, got her school on the board with a victory in the discus, her throw reaching 109-2.

Bradley, Davis, Montaño and Herrera raced to a win in the girls’ 1,600-meter medley relay, giving Robertson’s Lady Cardinals a first-place medal. Just back from an injury, senior Kassandra Tapia teamed with fellow senior Belen Romero, Abbey Bradley and Joedy Quintana to place third and score in the 1,600-meter relay.

Hope Christian ran away with the Class 3A girls’ team title with 107.5 points.

Robertson, coached by Benny Ortiz, was sixth with 33 points, a half-point behind Portales. West Las Vegas, coached by James Esquibel, finished 15th.
