It’s nice to be playing at home for the first round of the state basketball tournaments, as will be the case for West Las Vegas’ boys and girls, Robertson’s girls and Mora’s girls this weekend.
But the ultimate goal is to be miles away in the depths of the world-famous Pit by the time the finals play out March 14-15.
West Las Vegas Lady Dons are the No. 5 seed in Class 3A girls’ hoops. West (19-8) will host No. 12 Thoreau (17-9) at 7 p.m. Friday at Gillie Lopez Gym. The teams have not met this season.
Robertson’s Lady Cardinals (14-14) host Silver (17-10) in an 8-9 matchup at 6 p.m. Friday at Mike Marr Gym. It’ll be the first game between the two this season.
Class 2A’s No. 3 seed Mora Rangerettes (22-3) will host No. 14 Tohatchi (15-11) at 6 p.m. Friday at Montoya Gym. Mora and Tohatchi have not met this season.
West Las Vegas Dons (17-8), the No. 4 seed in Class 3A boys’ basketball, will host No. 13 Thoreau (16-9) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Gillie Lopez Gym. It’ll be the teams’ first meeting this year.
The No. 15 seed Robertson Cardinals (10-17) visit No. 2 St. Michael’s (21-7) for a 6 p.m. Saturday tip-off at Perez-Shelley Gym. The Horsemen won 49-37 on Jan. 8 at Mike Marr Gym.
Mora Rangers (13-16) are the No. 11 seed in Class 2A boys’ basketball and travel to No. 6 Mesilla Valley Christian (21-6) for a first-round game at 2 p.m. Saturday in Las Cruces. Mora has not played Mesilla Valley.
Playing in regional action this weekend is Wagon Mound. The Trojans won state in 2012 and returned to the final in 2013, losing to Hondo in a rematch. They are 16-11 overall, winners of three straight, and rated fifth in Class B boys’ hoops under new coach Danny Gray.
