Several locals qualify for state

With a month to go before the New Mexico high school track and field championships, a number of area athletes have punched their tickets to the big meet.

The small-school state meet is May 5-6, followed by the one for Class 3A through 5A on May 7-8, all at the University of New Mexico complex in Albuquerque.

Class 3A qualifiers include:

• Estevan Vigil, Robertson, in the boys’ 100-meter dash (11.02 seconds); 200 (22.6); 400 (51.76); long jump (20-3); and javelin (158-2, longest throw to date among 3A boys);

• Linda Esquibel, West Las Vegas, in the girls’ 400 (1:01.54, currently fastest in the state); triple jump (35-5);

• The Lady Cards’ 1,600-meter relay foursome (a state-best 4:13.82) and 1,600-meter medley relay (a state-best 4:37.32);

• Katie Houdek, Robertson, in the girls’ 200 (27.15);

• Kassandra Tapia, Robertson, in the girls’ 400 (1:01.89)

• Jayme Quintana, Robertson, in the girls’ 800-meter run (2:31.13);

• Belen Romero, Robertson, in the girls’ 1,600-meter run (5:52.93);

• The Lady Cardinals’ and Lady Dons’ 400-meter relay teams, with times of 51.9 and 53.29, respectively;

• The Lady Cardinals’ and Lady Dons’ 800-meter relay teams, with times of 1:51.7 and 1:54.46;

• Julia Hoogerhuis, Robertson, in the girls’ high jump with a 4-8;

• Jon Adam Dimas, Robertson, in the boys’ high jump, with a 5-10;

• Amy King, Robertson, in the girls’ triple jump (31-8).

Class 2A qualifiers of note:

• Yeshemabet Turner, Pecos, in the girls’ long jump (a state-best 17-6); triple jump (a state-best 37-0);

• Antonio Varela, Pecos, in the boys’ 3,200-meter run (10:42.8, leading the classification).
