A state lawmaker wants to change the New Mexico Constitution to prohibit governors from killing legislation without explanation.
Sen. Jacob Candelaria. D-Albuquerque, has introduced the proposal ahead of next month’s legislative session to do away with so-called pocket vetoes, the Albuquerque Journal reported Monday. Pocket vetoes occur when bills approved by lawmakers die because the governor fails to sign or veto them.
