A second-half slump cost West Las Vegas in Wednesday night’s District 2-3A boys’ basketball contest with visiting Taos. The Tigers won 73-56 at Gillie Lopez Gym.
Taos led by as many as 12 in the first half, but the Dons finished the second quarter on a run and cut the gap to one on Pancho Caro’s foul shots with 22 seconds left. The Tigers led 39-35 at intermission.
West (7-13, 2-1) rebounded poorly in the third quarter and spotted Taos a 12-0 run that left the Tigers up 51-35.
West didn’t score until Joe Ortiz made two free throws with 2:26 left in the quarter. And the Dons’ lone field goal in the period was a Caro putback with 14 seconds to go.
Caro swished a baseline jumper and then stole the ball for a layup to bring West within 55-46 early in the fourth quarter.
But Taos maintained its dominance in rebounding the ball, limiting the Dons to far too many one-and-out possessions.
Caro finished with a team-high 17 points. Ortiz scored 15 points, all but three of which came in the first half.
Shane Willis and Kyle Willis led Taos with 15 and 13, respectively.
