Joedy Quintana of Sapello finished 15 strokes out of first place and wound up sixth in the recent Sun Country PGA girls’ 12-and-under golf championship.
The event, part of the Sun Country’s Junior Tour Championship, took place July 28-29 at the University of New Mexico’s north course in Albuquerque.
Quintana opened the tournament with a 45 on the nine-hole junior course, following that by shooting a 47 on day two. Her two-day total of 92 was 20 strokes over par.
Deming’s Darian Zachek shot a tourney-best 37 on day one and finished with a 77, just five shots over par, to win the girls’ 11-12 championship. Zacheck held off Dominique Galloway of Rio Rancho, who finished three strokes back. The next five girls — including Quintana — were in a competitive battle over the two-day event and finished with scores between 87 and 93.
Other winners were Jacquelyn Galloway, Rio Rancho (girls’ 9-10), Amanda Portillo, El Paso (girls’ 7-8), Evan Macias, El Paso (boys’ 11-12), Andrew Kim, Albuquerque (boys’ 9-10), and Aaron Estrada, Alamogordo (boys’ 11-12). Macias and Estrada both had to win playoffs for their titles.
