Santa Fe Opera Youth Nights

-A A +A

Submitted to the Optic

Each summer, the Santa Fe Opera provides complimentary tickets for groups of students to attend opera performances. Youth under 23 years can attend free. This year, free youth tickets are available for two operas.

“Tosca” on Monday, June 25
Written by Puccini
Three main characters are Cesare, an escaped prisoner, his friend, Mario who tries to hide Cesare and Mario’s lover, Floria Tosca. The three experience profound tragedy brought about the Chief of the Secret Police due to his desire for Floria Tosca. To avoid capture, Cesare commits suicide. Mario dies in what was supposed to be a mock execution for aiding his friend. Floria Tosca kills the Chief of Police and then leaps to her death. A rather convoluted story set to beautiful music.

“The Pearl Fishers” on Tuesday, June 26
Written by Bizet
Bizet wrote the popular opera, “Carmen” and has many of his best loved tunes in “The Pearl Fishers.” The Pearl Fishers is set on the island of Ceylon off the Coast of India. The two main characters are in love with the same woman and agree to give her up because no woman is worth jeopardizing their lifelong friendship and bond. When she reappears in their lives, the result is drama and a life and death struggle with the whole village burning to the ground. So much for eternal friendship.

Free Transportation
This year with the generous contributions from Community First Bank and Las Vegas public schools, free transportation will be provided to both performances. The bus will leave Las Vegas at 6:15 p.m. and will return about midnight. Doors to the opera close at 8 p.m. There is an intermission around 9:30 p.m. and the opera ends about 11 p.m. Students can bring snacks or purchase beverage and snacks at the concession stand during intermission.

Sign Up for Free Tickets
Adults accompanying four to five youth can attend free. Adults who want to accompany less than four youth can attend at a discount rate of $16. They encourage students with an interest in music, art or theater to take advantage of this opportunity to get a small group together and sign up. The setting, scenery, music is beautiful and a lot of fun to experience with friends.
There are 13 free youth tickets still available for each performance. They will be given on a first come basis. They will keep a waiting list to contact in the event of cancelations and additional available tickets.
