Sophomore Ryan Sandoval ran to a 12th place individual finish and led the Pecos boys’ varsity cross country team to an eighth place team finish in this past Saturday’s Grimley Memorial Invitational hosted by Santa Fe Indian at Cochiti Pueblo.
Sandoval crossed the finish line in 17 minutes, 47 seconds.
Sub-19-minute times also were turned in by Pecos freshman Julian Garcia (33rd place, 18:32) and junior Jason Henderson (42nd, 18:42).
Josh Lopez (55th, 19:04), Isaac C de Baca (72nd, 19:32), Michael Quintana (78th, 19:39) and Isaac Varela (99th, 20:11) rounded out the Panther effort. The boys took eighth with 214 team points.
The lone girls’ varsity runner in the mix was Cayla Vigil, who landed 94th with a time of 26:06.
Pecos’ junior varsity boys fared well, placing second in that race with 71 team points.
Josh DeHerrera, Mario Archuleta and Michael Montaño, all eighth graders, all finished the course in less than 20 minutes to pace the Panther JV. DeHerrera (fourth, 19:20), Archuleta (sixth, 19:33) and Montaño (13th, 19:54) were trailed by teammates Jody Leal (20th, 20:19), Carlos Cordova (28th, 20:35), Isaac Ortiz (65th, 22:40), Louis Sanchez (81st, 23:37) and Chris Vigil (84th, 23:45).
Note: West Las Vegas’ cross country teams took twin sixth-place finishes in this past weekend’s La Cueva meet in Albuquerque. The Dons’ boys (107 team points) trailed only big schools.
