RHS tennis standout is hunting singles title this spring

Once the summer rolls around, David Romero will have time to fully focus on the next step in his education and tennis career — a trek to Roswell and New Mexico Military Institute.

For now, his sights are set on making a run at the state championship in Class 3A boys’ singles. And, of course, graduating from Robertson High School.

Romero teamed with cousin Amadeo Lopez to pursue the state title in boys’ doubles last spring, and the two cousins came away with that championship trophy.

Now, with tennis season opening this weekend, Romero is gunning for the top individual honors, and  — as was the case last year — he’s certainly among the top contenders.

Joined by his parents, head coach Roman Fulgenzi, RHS director of co-curricular activities Juan Carlos Fulgenzi, and a host of fellow students and friends, Romero this past week made official his plans to attend and play for NMMI next year.

The noontime gathering took place at Mike Marr Gym, where Romero has spent ample time working with the Cardinal boys’ basketball team this winter.
