As if the cold and rain wasn’t enough to contend with, Robertson’s Brandon Trujillo absorbed a jarring shot to the upper body from a collision with a Taos player in Saturday’s district match at RHS Field.
Both players tumbled immediately to the frigid grass. Trujillo, who’d seemed to take the worst of the crash, nevertheless hopped to his feet almost as quickly as he’d fallen. He resumed play shortly thereafter.
It’s that type of durability that has helped make Trujillo and teammate Jalen Martinez two of the top scorers in New Mexico boys’ soccer this season, according to MaxPreps.com.
Martinez, a senior, has 21 goals and five assists through 14 matches, giving him 47 total points and a points-per-game average of 4.273, ranking third in the state, regardless of school classification. He trails only Ricardo Zacarias of Las Cruces and Alejandro Garcia of Los Lunas in points-per-game average.
Trujillo, a junior, has 20 goals and 10 assists for 50 points and a 4.167 average, fifth-best in the state.
The Cardinals are 6-8 overall and face a tough fight in their district, having lost to Taos 4-0 on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Robertson’s girls continue to get major contributions from several players.
Caitlin Diefendorf’s two-goal, one-assist effort in a 4-0 win over Taos this past Thursday pushed her scoring total to 93, second most points in the state regardless of classification — by a large margin.
Diefendorf, just a sophomore, has a whopping 40 goals and 13 assists. Only Socorro senior Dezirae Armijo — off to a phenomenal start with 53 goals and 15 assists for 121 total points — is ahead of her statewide, according to NM Soccer.com.
The third-leading scorer in Class 1A-3A girls’ soccer is Robertson senior Elena Martinez, a longtime leader for the Lady Cardinals.
Martinez has 20 goals and 17 assists for 57 total points.
Morgan Diefendorf, Caitlin’s younger sister and an RHS freshman, is tied for fifth in the classification with 48 points — 19 goals and 10 assists.
Also listed among the leaders with double-digit points are Robertson’s Katie Houdek (four goals, 11 assists, 19 points), Tori Gallegos (four goals, three assists, 11 points), Kristen Montaño (three goals, five assists, 11 points) and Amber Yara (two goals, seven assists, 11 points).
The Lady Cardinals are ranked fourth in the state for their classification and have a 12-2 overall record under first-year head coach Ian Williamson.
Both Robertson squads are scheduled to host Pojoaque Valley in a district soccer doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
