Perimeter prowess helped St. Michael’s Lady Horsemen score a crushing 52-32 upset of host Robertson on Friday evening in the first round of the Class 3A girls’ state basketball tournament.

St. Mike’s, which came into the game as the No. 14 seed, shot its way to leads of 14-2 and 19-9 and never let up against the No. 3 Lady Cardinals.

Brittany Quintana knocked down a couple of early threes and finished with 12 points for St. Mike’s.

Jamie Allen, the lone Lady Cardinal in double figures, had 11, unofficially.

Struggling to make baskets in the first half in the face of a versatile Lady Horseman defense, Robertson fared somewhat better to start the second half. The Lady Cards got within 23-17.

But St. Mike’s closed the third quarter with strength, going up 34-22.

Again, as the fourth got under way, RHS made a bit of a run, getting within 36-28. The visitors got super stingy after that, however, going on an 8-0 run and outscoring the Lady Cards 16-4 to end the game.

St. Mike’s advances to a quarterfinal matchup with sixth-seeded Shiprock.

RHS finishes its season 16-9 and bids adieu to seniors Marka Garcia, Miranda Garcia, Eliana Herrera and Kassandra Tapia.
