Saturday night’s Robertson-Santa Fe Indian playoff game could have been a cozy reunion for two former district foes, but the No. 4 seed Cardinals were all business, disposing of the Braves 89-47 before a spirited Mike Marr Gym crowd.
Robertson advances to the Class 3A boys’ quarterfinals and will play Socorro at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.
Dalan Abreu led Robertson with 20 points and Justin Bustos tallied 14 of his 19 in the first half as RHS ran up a 47-23 lead.
Josh Brito, Joseph Mascareñas and Fabian Varela added 10 each, and John Adam Dimas had nine.
Abreu led the charge early, scoring five of the Cardinals’ points in their game-opening 10-2 run. The Braves battled, but back-to-back three-pointers by Varela and Bustos pumped the margin up to 16-6. An old-fashioned three-point play by Bustos got it to 23-8 with 1:33 left in the first period.
Mascareñas was a force inside the paint, particularly late in the second quarter. That’s when the Redbirds scored nine straight points as part of a 13-2 run to close the first half.
Head coach David Bustos employed pressure defense early, and the Braves had difficulty breaking the press.
