The first step to glory for New Mexico Highlands’ distance runners is this weekend in Silver City, host of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships.

The meet begins at 11 a.m. Saturday and is hosted by Western New Mexico University. As usual, the national juggernauts of Adams State and Western State are favorites in both men’s and women’s races.

NMHU last raced in the Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival on Oct. 5 in Fayetteville, Ark., where seniors Henrique Chavez and Marie-Josiane Ohoueu paced their respective squads.

Chavez and Ohoueu have been consistent No. 1 runners for Highlands throughout the fall.

After the RMAC meet, runners gear up for regionals Nov. 9 in Canyon, Texas. Regional qualifiers move on to nationals Nov. 23 in Spokane, Wash.
