Chantel Rivera scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Mora Rangerettes to a 50-33 romp in the girls’ basketball season opener against visiting Tucumcari this past Friday at Montoya Gym.

Gerty Herrera and Destiny Pacheco added 10 points apiece for Mora (1-0). Tucumcari’s Brianna Molinas and Esperanza Moncayo tallied 10 each for the Rattlers (1-1).

Mora started strong defensively and took a 13-5 lead after one period.

Tucumcari hit some shots in the second quarter and narrowed the margin to 23-19 at intermission.

But the Rangerettes dominated the second half to pull away. It was 37-25 going into the final eight minutes.

Next for Mora and coach Mark Cassidy is the Lady Lion Classic this Thursday through Saturday in Santa Rosa.

Note: Mora lost senior starter Aubrey Rubin to an ACL tear in her last volleyball match of the year, Cassidy noted. She will be out for the season.
